Week Nine in Review

Week Nine is complete and marked the NFL regular season debut of client Derek Hart with the Packers last night.  Hart becomes the third snapper the Packers have used this season, following injuries to client Brett Goode and, most recently, Goode’s replacement Taybor Pepper this past week. To earn the Packers job, Hart competed against three other tryout snappers in Colin Holba, Nolan Frese and Zach Triner

Unfortunately, Hart had a poor field goal snap to start his NFL career, but rebounded on his remaining snaps and even recorded an assisted tackle in punt coverage.

John Denney of the Dolphins played in his 200th game this week to become only the third Dolphin to reach that milestone in team history.

A special note from the college ranks, as Iowa snapper Tyler Kluver helped execute a perfect fake field goal against Ohio State in which Kluver caught a pass after his snap and nearly scored a touchdown.

Although not a snapper story, punter Johnny Hekker of the Rams received some significant press attention this week when a New York Times story by Ben Shipgel asked whether he might be “The N.F.L.’s Most Valuable Player”.  Shipgel profiles Hekker’s rise from an undrafted free agent punter, noting his rare combination of distance, direction and hang times makes him a unique special teams weapon.

In addition to Hart’s assisted tackle, two other snappers, Jon Weeks (Texans) and Kyle Nelson (49ers), added assists this week in punt coverage.

Week Eight in Review

Week Eight in the NFL is complete and was generally uneventful.  Bad weather, particularly for the east coast games, made some snaps difficult.

Prior to Week Eight action, two teams had snappers in for workouts in connection with  kicker and punter tryouts.  Trent Gow worked out with the Cowboys, while Anthony Kukwa snapped for the Giants.

Three snappers had tackles in punt coverage with Charley Hughlett (Browns) and Tyler Ott (Seahawks) adding solo tackles and Nick Sundberg (Redskins) tallying an assisted tackle.

Week Seven in Review

Week Seven in the NFL is complete and perhaps the biggest story involving a long snapper is the 200 tickets that Joe Cardona of the Patriots donated to military members for the Falcons game on Sunday night,  The CFL also had a noteworthy event this week, as BC Lions snapper Mike Benson recovered a fumble for a touchdown.

Two teams worked out snappers prior to Week Seven action.  Detroit worked out Andrew East, Nolan Frese and Jeff Overbaugh, while the Giants had East, Derek Hart and Colin Holba in as well.  The Giants workout was precautionary, as Zak DeOssie had a minor injury, but he was healthy for Sunday’s game and no move was needed.

Three snappers recorded tackles in punt coverage, with Morgan Cox of the Ravens recording a solo tackle and Reid Ferguson of the Bills adding an assisted tackle.  DeOssie also tallied two assisted tackles for the Giants, proving that any injury is not impacting his excellent coverage skills.

Week Six in Review

Week Six in the NFL brought some uncharacteristic bad snaps from Josh Harris of the Falcons and Jon Condo of the Raiders.  Harris appeared to have a punt snap accidentally blocked by a teammate, while Condo had a high snap on a late extra point attempt in a Raider loss.

Justin Drescher made a succesful debut with the Cardinals after taking over for Aaron Brewer, who has been placed on injured reserve.

The Bengals just extended the contract of Clark Harris for another season into 2018.  Harris has missed just three games since joining the Bengals in 2009 and completed 1,192 snaps and recorded 28 tackles.

Four snappers had tackles in punt coverage with Rick Lovato (Eagles), Joe Cardona (Patriots) and Zak DeOssie (Giants) recording solo tackles, while Charley Hughlett added an assisted tackle.

Week Five in Review

Week Five included the second injury during the regular season as Aaron Brewer of the Cardinals broke his wrist in the first quarter against the Eagles.  The Cardinals used position players Josh Mauro and Evan Boehm in place of Brewer.  The Cardinals worked out five snappers yesterday and signed former Saints snapper Justin Drescher to replace Brewer.  Other snappers included Andrew East, Jeff Overbaugh, Colin Holba and Drew Williams.

Despite the injury, Brewer did add an assisted tackle in punt coverage.  Jon Condo of the Raiders added a tackle and Thomas Hennessy of the Jets had an assisted tackle.

Week Four in Review

Week Four is complete and was an uneventful one for snappers.  Taybor Pepper made his debut for the Packers to replace injured Brett Goode.  There has been one recent snapper workout, as the Titans hosted Andrew East and Anthony Kukwa.

Just one snapper, John Denney of the Dolphins, had a tackle in punt coverage this week as he tallied a solo tackle against the Saints in the London game.

2017 Division One Long Snappers

One of the most anticipated features each year at Longsnap.com is the exclusive compilation of snappers for each of the Division One college football teams.

This year’s list is attached below and features the punt snapper from each of the 120 Division One teams.  This was compiled from a variety of sources during the past few weeks, so it is possible there have been a few changes.  In addition, heights and weights tend to vary by source, so there may be differences from what a college team may list and what is included here.

Some early senior NFL prospects on this list include Ike Powell (Auburn), Tanner Carew (Oregon) and Trent Seig (Colorado State).

Death. Taxes. Muhlbach.

Don Muhlbach of the Lions is about to play in his 200th game today.  That, along with his impressive 14-year career, would normally be included in my Tuesday review of the Week Four action in the NFL.

However, Mulhbach’s accomplishments received the long read treatment in Kyle Meinke’s story a few days ago that appeared on mlive.com.  After reading it, I concluded the story and his remarkable career deserves its own post. Entitled “Death. Taxes. Don Freaking Muhlbach”, the story provides something that a long snapper rarely, if ever, wants… an in-depth profile.

For anyone interested in the mindset of what it takes to excel as a long snapper in the NFL, the story is worth your time.

Week Three in Review

Week Three of the NFL season is complete and next week will bring the first change to the snapping position.  Client Brett Goode of the Packers was injured in Sunday’s game and will be replaced by Taybor Pepper, who was in camp with the Packers this summer.

Longsnap.com’s exclusive compilation of every Division One long snapper is being finalized now and will be published next Monday, October 2nd.

Five snappers had tackles in punt coverage with Charley Hughlett (Browns), Zak DeOssie (Giants) and Aaron Brewer (Cardinals) tallying solo tackles and Joe Cardona (Patriots) and Clark Harris (Bengals) adding assisted tackles.  Kyle Nelson (49ers) had a fumble recovery during Thursday’s game.  Cardona has recorded a tackle or assisted tackle in all three games this season.

Clint Gresham’s “Becoming” Book Out October 3rd

Client and former NFL long snapper Clint Gresham has written a book, “Becoming: Loving the Process to Wholeness.”  Gresham, who recently retired from the NFL after six seasons with Seattle, played in two Super Bowls with the Seahawks, winning a ring in 2014..

Below is the description of the book which is available for advance purchase on Amazon.com here.

For most of his life, Clint Gresham, like many if not most of us, experienced the world through the lens of outcomes: Academics. Behavior. Sports victories. Career. Relationships. Material success. The underlying message? When the outcomes are good, you are good. When the outcomes are bad, you are bad.

Becoming unfolds a gripping and inspirational reality check, reminding us all that the point of life is not the destination, but the journey. Each of us is in the process of becoming who God designed us to be. While the journey can be painful, it is also necessary―a process that must be fully embraced if we are to experience wholeness of soul. By fixing your heart on God’s process, the outcomes take care of themselves.

Step back. Breathe. Stay in the moment. And take the long-term approach. Your ups and downs are a beautiful story God is telling through you. We are all Becoming . . . something incredible.
