Week Four in Review

Week Four is complete and was an uneventful one for snappers.  Taybor Pepper made his debut for the Packers to replace injured Brett Goode.  There has been one recent snapper workout, as the Titans hosted Andrew East and Anthony Kukwa.

Just one snapper, John Denney of the Dolphins, had a tackle in punt coverage this week as he tallied a solo tackle against the Saints in the London game.

2017 Division One Long Snappers

One of the most anticipated features each year at Longsnap.com is the exclusive compilation of snappers for each of the Division One college football teams.

This year’s list is attached below and features the punt snapper from each of the 120 Division One teams.  This was compiled from a variety of sources during the past few weeks, so it is possible there have been a few changes.  In addition, heights and weights tend to vary by source, so there may be differences from what a college team may list and what is included here.

Some early senior NFL prospects on this list include Ike Powell (Auburn), Tanner Carew (Oregon) and Trent Seig (Colorado State).

Death. Taxes. Muhlbach.

Don Muhlbach of the Lions is about to play in his 200th game today.  That, along with his impressive 14-year career, would normally be included in my Tuesday review of the Week Four action in the NFL.

However, Mulhbach’s accomplishments received the long read treatment in Kyle Meinke’s story a few days ago that appeared on mlive.com.  After reading it, I concluded the story and his remarkable career deserves its own post. Entitled “Death. Taxes. Don Freaking Muhlbach”, the story provides something that a long snapper rarely, if ever, wants… an in-depth profile.

For anyone interested in the mindset of what it takes to excel as a long snapper in the NFL, the story is worth your time.

Week Three in Review

Week Three of the NFL season is complete and next week will bring the first change to the snapping position.  Client Brett Goode of the Packers was injured in Sunday’s game and will be replaced by Taybor Pepper, who was in camp with the Packers this summer.

Longsnap.com’s exclusive compilation of every Division One long snapper is being finalized now and will be published next Monday, October 2nd.

Five snappers had tackles in punt coverage with Charley Hughlett (Browns), Zak DeOssie (Giants) and Aaron Brewer (Cardinals) tallying solo tackles and Joe Cardona (Patriots) and Clark Harris (Bengals) adding assisted tackles.  Kyle Nelson (49ers) had a fumble recovery during Thursday’s game.  Cardona has recorded a tackle or assisted tackle in all three games this season.

Clint Gresham’s “Becoming” Book Out October 3rd

Client and former NFL long snapper Clint Gresham has written a book, “Becoming: Loving the Process to Wholeness.”  Gresham, who recently retired from the NFL after six seasons with Seattle, played in two Super Bowls with the Seahawks, winning a ring in 2014..

Below is the description of the book which is available for advance purchase on Amazon.com here.

For most of his life, Clint Gresham, like many if not most of us, experienced the world through the lens of outcomes: Academics. Behavior. Sports victories. Career. Relationships. Material success. The underlying message? When the outcomes are good, you are good. When the outcomes are bad, you are bad.

Becoming unfolds a gripping and inspirational reality check, reminding us all that the point of life is not the destination, but the journey. Each of us is in the process of becoming who God designed us to be. While the journey can be painful, it is also necessary―a process that must be fully embraced if we are to experience wholeness of soul. By fixing your heart on God’s process, the outcomes take care of themselves.

Step back. Breathe. Stay in the moment. And take the long-term approach. Your ups and downs are a beautiful story God is telling through you. We are all Becoming . . . something incredible.

Week Two in Review

Week Two of the NFL season is complete and was generally an uneventful one for snappers.  Before the games started Sunday, however, Katherine Terrell of ESPN.com wrote a in-depth story about Clark Harris of the Bengals, one of 14 snappers that may earn more than $1 million this season.

Teams have conducted some recent workouts with snappers in case of emergency.  Among the workouts are Andrew East (Bears), Taybor Pepper (Patriots), Colin Holba (Jacksonville) and, most recently, client Derek Hart (Bills).

Seven snappers recorded tackles in punt coverage in Week Two, led by James Winchester of the Chiefs, who had a solo tackle and forced fumble on the same play.  Beau Brinkley (Titans), Joe Cardona (Patriots), Casey Kreiter (Broncos) and Nick Sundberg (Redskins) also had solo tackles, while Jon Weeks (Texans) and Clark Harris (Bengals) each had assisted tackles.

Week One in Review

The first week of the 2017 NFL season is now complete and a number of snappers made their NFL debuts.  Zach Wood won a snapping tryout for the Saints to replace Jon Dorenbos (more about that below) and had a strong debut on Monday Night Football.  Reid Ferguson (Bills), Luke Rhodes (Colts) and Thomas Hennessy (Jets) also snapped in their first regular season games.

Dorenbos, who likely had his life saved by his physical with the Saints, is scheduled for heart surgery this morning. We wish him the best for a speedy recovery.

Wood became the sixth snapper the Saints have signed since last season.  For those who want insight into what NFL long snapper workouts are like and how teams choose, below is the Q and A with Sean Payton, the Saints head coach.

What did you like about Zach Wood, the long snapper that you signed?

“We had four or five guys in. (We) Treated it like the Voice (laughter), Mickey (Loomis) and I were in a chair, the pro (personnel) department, special teams (coaches) and we just hit the buzzer and turned around. Those guys all worked out, we have seen all of their film. We’ve graded their tape. There are enough game snaps in the preseason that we saw and of course we had a good grade on him prior and know the folks in Dallas pretty well. A lot of the group was younger and there was one experienced player and I felt like it was a similar decision we made in ’07 or ’08 when we brought in (Justin) Drescher and some older players. He has played defense and had a good workout.”

With respect to tackles in punt coverage, Josh Harris (Falcons) and Joe Cardona (Patriots), each recorded assisted tackles.

Dorenbos to Have Open Heart Surgery

There was some very sad news today in the long snapping world, as it was revealed that Jon Dorenbos has an aortic aneurysm.  Dorenbos, who was recently traded from the Eagles to the Saints, may have had this condition since birth but it was just discovered during his physical after the trade.  He will require open heart surgery and we wish him the very best and a speedy recovery.

It has already been a turbulent time for snappers in New Orleans.  With Dorenbos out, the Saints worked out Tanner Purdum, John DePalma, Zach Wood, Colin Holba and Jeff Overbaugh today.  Although it is unclear at this time which snapper will be signed, it will be the sixth snapper for the Saints before the season even starts.

Two Great College Snapping Stories from the Weekend

Although the NFL gets most of the attention when it comes to snapping, there are always great stories from the college ranks.  This weekend was no different.

Jake Olson of USC, who has been profiled on Longsnap.com in the past since he is legally blind, had his first game action Saturday night.  Olson snapped a successful short snap for an extra point late in the victory over Western Michigan.  Earlier that day, freshman snapper Adam Higuera of Tulsa recovered a fumbled punt in the end zone for a touchdown.  Not bad for his first collegiate game.

Snapping Spots Now Settled

One day after final cuts, it appears that the snapping position for all 32 NFL teams is finally settled.  Today, the Bears claimed Andrew DePaola off waivers and, in turn, waived Jeff Overbaugh, while the Bucs brought back Garrison Sanborn.

After Week One of the NFL season is complete, Longsnap.com will publish its exclusive compilation of NFL snappers, along with data such as height, weight, experience, contract status, special teams coach and any tackles recorded in punt coverage.
