Week Five in Review

Week Five had been an uneventful one on the field for long snappers until Monday Night Football.  New Niners snapper, veteran Garrison Sanborn, had a rough night and the Niners missed three field goals.

Sanborn is the third snapper for the Niners this year after they moved on from Colin Holba after two games and Jon Condo retired after one game.  The Niners will have Kyle Nelson back when his suspension expires after Week Seven.

The biggest snapping news off the field involved  Thomas Hennessy of the Jets.  Hennessy, who would have become a restricted free agent after this season, signed a four-year extension that will keep him under contract through the 2023 season.

On the field, three tackles recorded assisted tackles in punt coverage, including Hennessy. Josh Harris (Falcons) and Nick Sundberg (Redskins) also had assists.

Week Four in Review

Week Four was a quiet one at the snapping position, with no major issues or injuries.  Four snappers did record tackles in punt coverage, as client Casey Kreiter (Broncos) and Trent Sieg (Raiders) had solo tackles while JJ Jansen (Panther) and Jon Weeks (Texans) added assisted tackles.

Week Three in Review

Week Three brought the first change at the snapping position.  Looking for more consistency, the Niners waived Colin Holba and signed veteran Jon Condo.  Condo is a 13-year veteran who played with the Falcons last season.    The Niners also worked out Garrison Sanborn and Drew Scott.

However, after snapping Sunday, Condo decided to retire yesterday and the Niners signed  Sanborn.  The other Niners snapper, Kyle Nelson, is eligible to snap again in Week Seven,  when his 10 game suspension that started last season expires.

In addition to the Niners workout, the Falcons also had Nick Moore in for a tryout.  Moore was in camp with the Saints in the preseason.

Just one snapper, Thomas Hennessy of the Jets, recorded a tackle in punt coverage.  The NFL Long Snappers Chart after Week Three is below.

Week Two in Review

Week Two is complete and the first game of the week on Thursday Night Football put new Bucs snapper Zach Triner squarely in the limelight.  Triner, who last played in a meaningful football game in 2014, made a nice desperation tackle in punt coverage.  That tackle got Triner some positive social media attention and, later, a profile story from noted NFL writer Peter King.

Like many long snappers, Triner’s journey to NFL success was not a straight or easy one.  He snapped just one season at Assumption and also played college lacrosse.  He had 13 tryouts over the past four years, including eight last year alone, before making the Bucs this season.

While Triner’s tackle may have been the most noteworthy, four other snappers also added tackles in punt coverage this week.  Thomas Hennessy (Jets) had two solo tackles, while Aaron Brewer (Cardinals) and client Patrick Scales (Bears) added solo tackles.  Beau Brinkley (Titans) had an assisted tackle.

Week One in Review

The first week of the NFL season is complete and was a quiet one on the field for snappers.  There are 24 teams that have special teams captains and three of them are long snappers.  The three are Charley Hughlett (Browns), Don Muhlbach (Lions) and Zak DeOssie (Giants).

Just prior to the start of the regular season, the Titans signed Beau Brinkley to a contract extension through 2023, as he would have been an unrestricted free agent after this season.  One team worked out free agent snappers prior to this week’s action, as the Texans had Carson Tinker and Christian Kuntz for a workout.

Finally, two snappers had tackles in punt coverage.  Nick Sundberg of the Redskins recorded a solo tackle and Jon Weeks of the Texans had an assist.

2019 Division One Long Snappers

Longsnap.com is proud to present its exclusive compilation of the long snappers for each Division One FBS college football team for the 2019 season.

The list includes uniform number, name, height, weight and class year.  Like last year, this list should be very accurate, as it was compiled directly from each team’s official depth charts during the first week of the college season.  Only punt snappers are listed, as some teams still use a dedicated punt snapper and a separate kick snapper.

Dolphins Cut Veteran Denney; Sign Pepper

The Dolphins are getting rid of veteran players this season and long-time snapper John Denney was one of today’s victims.  Denney, who had the NFL’s longest active consecutive game steak of 224 over his 14 year career, was cut in favor of Taybor Pepper, who was just released by the Giants.

As of now, four snappers will make their NFL regular season debuts in Week One.  They are Matthew Orzech (Jacksonville), Cole Mazza (Chargers), Austin Cutting (Vikings) and Zach Triner (Buccaneers).

Jaguars Claim Orzech; Release Overton

NFL rosters were officially set yesterday but a lot of shuffling still takes place during the next few days.  The snapper position is usually not impacted but today was different as the Jaguars claimed rookie Matthew Orzech off waivers from the Ravens.  With the addition of Orzech, the Jaguars released veteran Matt Overton.

Roster Cutdown Day Impacts Long Snappers

It has been a busy week at the snapping position and final roster cuts to 53 players brought some closure to a few training camp battles.  Before final cuts, the Raiders released Andrew DePaola in favor of Trent Sieg and the Saints waived rookie Nick Moore.  In addition, the Steelers added Christian Kuntz for the final preseason week.  Kuntz snapped and played defense in Pittsburgh’s final preseason game but was waived today.

DePaola was quickly added by the Panthers in light of a minor injury to JJ Jansen and snapped the last preseason game but then released.  The other snappers that were waived during  final cuts were Matt Orzech (Ravens), John Wirtel (Bears), Dan Godsil (Bengals), Drew Scott (Cowboys), Wes Farnsworth (Dolphins) and Taybor Pepper (Giants).

With these moves, the Vikings (Austin Cutting), Chargers (Cole Mazza) and Buccaneers (Zach Triner) are the three teams with new snappers.  The Niners have both Colin Holba and Kyle Nelson, but Nelson is suspended for the first six games of the season.

Chargers Release Veteran Windt

The end of the second week of the NFL preseason brought another dramatic move at the snapping position, as the Chargers released veteran Mike Windt.  Windt signed with the Chargers in October of 2010 and had been a steady and reliable snapper since that time.  Cole Mazza is now the long snapper for the Chargers.

Windt did receive some additional unwanted attention last night, the same day he was released, when a clip of him walking on the field during an active play in the first preseason game was shown on HBO’s Hard Knocks.  Windt was flagged, although it turned out he was correct entering the field because it was fourth down.  Review showed that the referees erroneously allowed the third down play to continue when it should have been stopped.

Last week, veteran Kevin McDermott made news with his release and he announced yesterday that he will be having elbow surgery and then rehabilitating.
