Patrick Mannelly Award Long Snapper Profile Form Available

FBS senior college long snappers can now submit their information and videos to be considered for the first annual Patrick Mannelly Award.  Snappers must perform both long and short snaps and submit a link to video for all of this season’s snaps.

The Profile Form, linked below, will be used to narrow the list of eligible FBS senior snappers to ten by Monday, November 18th.  The following Monday, November 25th, three finalists will be announced and then the Award will be presented Saturday, December 14th.

Week Eight in Review

Week Eight is complete and missed field goal and extra point attempts were critical in a number of games.  However, few appeared to be related to the snap.

After using three snappers while he was suspended, Kyle Nelson returned to action this week for the Niners.  Garrison Sanborn was waived due to Nelson’s return after he missed ten games dating back to last season.

Three snappers recorded tackles in punt coverage as Zak DeOssie (Giants) and Luke Rhodes (Colts) had solo tackles and Joe Cardona (Patriots) added an assisted tackle.

Seven Additions Made to Patrick Mannelly Award Watch List

On December 14th, the Patrick Mannelly Award will be presented, for the first time, to the best senior FBS long snapper.  An initial Watch List of 25 snappers was announced on August 1, 2019 and, on Wednesday, seven new names were added.

Patrick Phibbs (Clemson), Blake Best (Kentucky), Keegan Firth (Oregon State), Devin King (Ohio), Steven Nixon (Georgia), Matt Oliveira (South Carolina) and Anthony Ratliff (East Carolina) were all added to the Watch List.

Ten semi-finalists will be announced Monday, November 18th and then narrowed to the three finalists the following Monday, November 25th before the selection of the winner  December 14th.

Week Seven in Review

Week Seven is complete and Don Muhlbach of the Lions continues to move up the all-time games played list.  With Sunday’s appearance, Muhlbach has played in 234 games over his 16 seasons that puts him 88th in NFL history for games played.

The Niners now have Kyle Nelson available from his 10 game suspension.  The Niners can activate him this week or have a one week exemption to activate him next week.  In his absence, San Francisco used Colin Holba, Jon Condo and current snapper Garrison Sanborn.

Just one snapper, Aaron Brewer (Cardinals), recorded a tackle this week, as he had an assisted tackle.

XFL Teams Draft Long Snappers

The XFL concluded its two day draft this afternoon and today was the day that long snappers could be selected.  Each of the eight teams now has one snapper on the roster, although the DC club selected a player that also plays defensive end in Brian Khoury.

In addition, it appears that teams could select players that were not on the initially announced draft pool, as snappers John Wirtel and Nick Moore were both taken despite not being included in the announced player pool.

Below are the drafted snapper for each team.

Week Six in Review

Week Six of the NFL season is complete and was a calm and uneventful one for long snappers.  Just two snappers recorded tackles in punt coverage, as Rick Lovato (Eagles) had a solo tackle and JJ Jansen (Panthers) recorded an assisted tackle.

The XFL is coming back in 2020 and will conduct a player draft Tuesday and Wednesday of next week to populate team rosters for the eight teams.

Week Five in Review

Week Five had been an uneventful one on the field for long snappers until Monday Night Football.  New Niners snapper, veteran Garrison Sanborn, had a rough night and the Niners missed three field goals.

Sanborn is the third snapper for the Niners this year after they moved on from Colin Holba after two games and Jon Condo retired after one game.  The Niners will have Kyle Nelson back when his suspension expires after Week Seven.

The biggest snapping news off the field involved  Thomas Hennessy of the Jets.  Hennessy, who would have become a restricted free agent after this season, signed a four-year extension that will keep him under contract through the 2023 season.

On the field, three tackles recorded assisted tackles in punt coverage, including Hennessy. Josh Harris (Falcons) and Nick Sundberg (Redskins) also had assists.

Week Four in Review

Week Four was a quiet one at the snapping position, with no major issues or injuries.  Four snappers did record tackles in punt coverage, as client Casey Kreiter (Broncos) and Trent Sieg (Raiders) had solo tackles while JJ Jansen (Panther) and Jon Weeks (Texans) added assisted tackles.

Week Three in Review

Week Three brought the first change at the snapping position.  Looking for more consistency, the Niners waived Colin Holba and signed veteran Jon Condo.  Condo is a 13-year veteran who played with the Falcons last season.    The Niners also worked out Garrison Sanborn and Drew Scott.

However, after snapping Sunday, Condo decided to retire yesterday and the Niners signed  Sanborn.  The other Niners snapper, Kyle Nelson, is eligible to snap again in Week Seven,  when his 10 game suspension that started last season expires.

In addition to the Niners workout, the Falcons also had Nick Moore in for a tryout.  Moore was in camp with the Saints in the preseason.
