Stability only lasts so long in the NFL. Sunday’s game in London thrust the backup long snapper into the national spotlight when Jaguars snapper Ross Matiscik suffered a should injury on the first punt.
DaVon Hamilton, a defensive lineman, who has snapped for Matiscik in the past when he was injured during a game, was forced back into snapping duties. Although Hamilton struggled with his short snaps during the game, he came through on a last-second, game winning field goal to become the unofficial MVP of the game.
With Matiscik potentially out for the next game in England, the Jaguars have flown veteran Jacob Bobenmoyer out to serve as a potential replacement. Bobenmoyer will likely be added to the practice squad and activated if needed. For now, every NFL team is likely spending some extra practice time this week with their backup long snapper just in case.
The only tryout this week was Peter Bowden, who worked out for the Dolphins but was not signed.
Two snappers recorded tackles in punt coverage this week, with Nick Moore (Ravens) recording a solo tackle and Alex Ward (Raiders) tallied an assisted tackle.
