Week Nine in Review

Week Nine saw another snapper lost to injury. Andrew DePaola of the Vikings suffered a hand injury in the Sunday Night game and will miss at least four games after being placed on injured reserve. It is unclear as of this morning who the Vikings will sign to replace DePaola.

In other snapper transactions, the Buccaneers have designated Evan Deckers to return from injured reserve, although Zach Triner snapped last night. The Bears released veteran Jake McQuaide from its practice squad so he is the top veteran snapper available for a team with a need.

Saints special teams coach Darren Rizzi will serve as head coach in New Orleans after Dennis Allen was fired.

Four snappers recorded tackles in punt coverage this week, led by Jacob Bobenmoyer who had a tackle and an assist. Zach Wood (Saints) had a solo tackle and Hogan Hatten (Lions) and DePaola (Vikings) each added assisted tackles.

Week Eight in Review

Week Eight was a rare week of stability at the snapping position with no changes or tryouts. Veteran Josh Harris of the Chargers had a rare bad punt snap that lead to a safety, but otherwise it was a generally uneventful week for snappers after weeks of injuries and changes.

The only transaction during the week involved the Patriots releasing Tucker Addington from its practice squad after Joe Cardona was able to snap the past two weeks. Scott Daly snapped for the Bears although Jake McQuaide remains on the Bears practice squad as of this morning.

Two snappers recorded assisted tackles in punt coverage this week, one from Ross Matiscik (Jaguars) and the other by Trent Sieg (Cowboys).

Week Seven in Review

There was more change at the snapping position this week. Veteran Matt Overton returned to the NFL with the Dolphins, replacing Blake Ferguson was who placed on injured reserve with a non-football injury. Overton last snapped in an NFL regular season game for the Cowboys in 2022. Overton had a tryout before his signing that also included Peter Bowden, Cam Lyons and Joe Shimko.

Ferguson is now the fourth snapper on injured reserve, joining client Patrick Scales (Bears), Evan Deckers (Buccaneers) and Charley Hughlett (Browns).

The Bears added veteran snapper Jake McQuaide to the practice squad in case Scott Daly cannot snap this coming week. The Packers also released Matt Orzech yesterday but that appears to be a procedural move for roster space and he should be re-signed.

In game action, Joe Cardona returned for the Patriots after missing Week Six. JJ Jansen of the Panthers became the 59th player in NFL history to play in 250 games this Sunday.

Five snappers recorded tackles in punt coverage this week. Morgan Cox (Titans), Reid Ferguson (Bills), Rex Sunahara (Browns), Matt Orzech (Packers) and Jacob Bobenmoyer (Raiders) each had a solo tackle.

Week Six in Review

The peace and calm at the long snapping position is gone. It started in Week Five and continued in force this week. It was another week of big special teams plays and miscues, with blocked field goals and punts. There were also some new snappers this week.

Last week saw a controversial field goal block by the Giants against the Seahawks. A Giants player pushed down on snapper Chris Stoll but was not penalized. The official rules interpretation of that play was that “pushing down alone is not a foul and there was no forcible contact to the head and neck”. The Browns also executed a blocked field goal by leaping over Eagles snapper Rick Lovato.

New snappers appeared Sunday for Cleveland and New England due to injuries. Rex Sunahara, who was in training camp and the practice squad earlier this season for the Browns made his NFL debut in place of Charley Hughlett. Hughlett, who played 152 consecutive games for the Browns since 2015, in on injured reserve with a rib injury. He joins client Patrick Scales (Bears) and Evan Deckers (Buccaneers) as the other snappers on injured reserve.

Tucker Addington snapped for the Patriots after Joe Cardona suffered a calf injury Friday. Addington was first added to the practice squad and activated for the game Sunday.

In game action, Bears snapper Scott Daly, filling in for Scales, was injured after a punt snap. Tight End Cole Kmet, who scored two touchdowns, snapped as the emergency snapper. The Bears have a bye so it is not clear what Daly’s status is or if the Bears plan to add a snapper.

Earlier in the week, two teams hosted snappers for tryouts. Baltimore worked out veteran Jake McQuaide and later brought in Addington and Peter Bowden, while the Texans worked out Addington and Joe Shimko.

Three snappers recorded tackles in punt coverage, led by Casey Krieter (Giants) and Mitch Fraboni (Broncos) who each had a tackle and an assist. Zach Wood (Saints) added an assisted tackle.

Week Five in Review

Week Five of the NFL season included very notable special teams plays. There were a number of blocked field goals, botched holds and even a few bad snaps after a nearly perfect start to the season.

There was also the first emergency snapper pressed into action, when Browns snapper Charley Hughlett left the game with an apparent rib injury. Tight end Blake Whiteheart came in to snap and it is unclear as if this morning if Hughlett can snap this week. If not, Rex Sunahara is a likely candidate to fill the role.

Just two snappers recorded tackles in punt coverage this week, with Casey Kreiter (Giants) making a solo tackle and Andrew DePaola (Vikings) adding an assist.

Week Four in Review

Week Four brought the first snapping change of the season as the Buccaneers placed first-year snapper Evan Deckers on injured reserve due to a hamstring injury and brought back veteran Zach Triner after a workout.

The Falcons also worked out specialists, including rookie snappers Peter Bowden and Randen Plattner in case of emergency.

Five snappers recorded tackles in punt coverage this week. Mitchell Fraboni (Broncos) and Morgan Cox (Titans) has solo tackles, while Joe Cardona (Patriots), Blake Ferguson (Dolphins) and Hogan Hatten (Lions) added assists. For Cardona it was the fourth consecutive week with a tackle and it was Hatten’s first tackle of his NFL career.

Week Three in Review

Week Three was another quiet one for snappers, although Tampa Bay lost first-year snapper Evan Deckers with an apparent hamstring injury in the third quarter of Sunday’s game. The team did not punt or kick after the injury, although tight end Cade Otton would have served as the emergency snapper. The Bucs could bring back veteran Zach Triner, who was waived in favor of Deckers at final cuts, if the injury is more serious but no moves have been made as of this morning.

Six snappers made tackles in punt coverage including Joe Cardona (Patriots) who has a solo tackle in each game this season. Thomas Hennessy (Jets) and Jacob Bobenmoyer (Vegas) also had solo stops, while Casey Kreiter (Giants), Christian Kurtz (Steelers) and James Winchester (Chiefs) recorded assisted tackles.

2024 FBS Long Snappers

The 2024 college football season is underway so let’s take a look at Longsnap.com’s exclusive compilation of the long snapper for each FBS team.

As usual, the list is sorted by conference and includes the snapper’s uniform number, height, weight and class year.

Note that some teams still do not publish an official depth chart, while others listed two snappers or divide the punt and placement snaps between two players. Where that is the case, the chart includes the punt snapper that was listed first on the depth chart for the first game of the season.
