Week Three in Review

Week Three of the NFL season is complete and, like Week Two, was generally uneventful for snappers. There was a unique “butt punt” in the Dolphins game against the Bills that has been covered in detail elsewhere.

The Giants had a few snappers in on a tryout basis earlier in the week. The workout featured Kam Canaday, Mitch Fraboni and Steven Wirtel, although no one was signed. The Rams released veteran Matt Overton from the practice squad now that Matt Orzech appears fully recovered.

Five snappers did record tackles in punt coverage this week, led by Aaron Brewer (Cardinals) who had two solo tackles. Nick Moore (Ravens) and Josh Harris (Chargers) each had a solo tackle, while Luke Rhodes (Colts) and Zach Wood (Saints) had assists.

The NFL Long Snappers Chart after Week Three is below.

Week Two in Review

Week Two of the NFL season was a typical one for the snapping position after a crazy first week. Cal Adomitis made his NFL debut for the Bengals without incident. He joins rookie Jack Coco (Packers) and client Liam McCullough (Raiders) as the three snappers to make their NFL regular season debuts in 2022.

The Rams added Matt Overton to the practice squad this week in the event Matt Orzech, who suffered a calf injury, could not snap. Orzech was able to snap on Sunday despite the injury.

Three snappers had tackles in punt coverage this week. Client Patrick Scales (Bears) and Trent Sieg (Raiders) had solo tackles, while Josh Harris (Chargers) tallied an assisted tackle.

Week One in Review

Week One of the 2022 NFL Season is complete and was an eventful one for snappers and kickers.

In addition to 15 missed kicks, a late game biceps injury to Bengals veteran snapper Clark Harris forced the use of a backup snapper, tight end Mitchell Wilcox, in the fourth quarter and overtime. Wilcox struggled with his short snaps and the operation time for the unit was off, resulting in missed kicks. The situation brought significant attention to the need for a reliable snapper and how hard it can be if there is an in-game emergency.

Starting next week, rookie Cal Adomitis will take over for Harris, who was placed on the injured/reserve list with a torn biceps. Ironically, Adomitis was one of two snappers added to a practice squad before Week One.

Veteran snapper Carson Tinker was the other snapper on a practice squad for the Seahawks after a workout that also included Matt Overton. Tinker was activated prior to last night’s game after it was revealed Tyler Ott may need shoulder surgery.

The Bears were penalized in a unique manner that prevented a field goal attempt. Rookie punter Trenton Gill used a towel to wipe down the area where the ball would be placed for the kick. It had rained for hours before the game and during it as well. The rule prohibits altering the playing surface where the ball will be spotted with a foreign object.

Other than the Sehawks tryout, the Falcons were the only team to work out snappers since final cuts, bringing in Mitch Fraboni, Kam Canaday and John Wirtel.

Just one snapper, Thomas Hennessy of the Jets, recorded a tackle in punt coverage this week. The NFL Long Snappers Chart after Week One is below.

2022 Division One FBS Long Snappers Chart

Week One of the college football season is complete and the season is off to a great start with some fantastic games and finishes.

To celebrate college football’s return, below is the annual chart containing Longsnap.com’s exclusive compilation of the long snapper for each FBS team. As usual, the list is sorted by conference and includes the snapper’s uniform number, height, weight and class year.

Note that some teams did not publish an official depth chart, while others listed two snappers or divide the punt and placement snaps between two players. In each case, best efforts were made to include the punt snapper to start the first game and the snapper that performs punt snaps is included over the short snapper.

All but one of the snappers on the 2022 Patrick Mannelly Award Watch List are listed as the starting snappers for their team and four of them (Alex Ward-UCF; Evan Deckers-Duke; Michael Vinson-Notre Dame; and Matt Hembrough-Oklahoma State) were included on the East-West Shrine Bowl 1000 List of the top NFL Draft prospects. Rex Goossen of UNLV is still recovering from a late season knee injury last year so is not the chart below, but is on both the Mannelly Award Watch List and East-WestShrine Bowl 1000 List.

Adomitis Only Snapper Cut as Initial NFL Rosters Set

Today is normally an eventful one for long snappers, but this year continues to be highly unusual for snappers. Rookie Cal Adomitis was waived by the Bengals, as veteran Clark Harris beat another challenger.

It looks like Jack Coco will start the season in Green Bay as the only rookie snapper. Coco’s story is an incredible one, as he didn’t snap for Georgia Tech this past season and only did short snapping in prior years. He parlayed a Packers tryout into a training camp contract and now an NFL roster spot.

Client Liam McCullough will join Coco as the only new snappers on an NFL roster this season, as McCullough will snap for the Falcons after two seasons competing in training camp with the Raiders.

Veteran snappers Aaron Brewer (Cardinals) and Jake McQuaide (Cowboys) were also released today but due to roster space issues and both should be brought back by their teams soon.

One Long Snapping Battle Left After Cuts to 85

NFL teams were required to move from 90 active players to 85 today and that deadline forced the Texans to waive recently signed snapper Harrison Elliott. That leaves the battle between veteran Clark Harris and rookie Cal Adomitis in Cincinnati as the only remaining snapping competition.

The Raiders worked out snapper Brian Khoury today in the only tryout involving a snapper.

Snapper Signings and Tryouts as Preseason Gets Underway

The NFL slate of preseason games is starting and a few teams made moves and continued their evaluations in case of emergency at the snapping position.

In the past week, the Panthers waived last year’s Sixth Round pick Thomas Fletcher and the Packers did the same with Steven Wirtel, who spent the final half of last season in Green Bay.

The only team to add a snapper was the Texans, who added Harrison Elliott to the roster while Jon Weeks was out for medical reasons. Elliott is from the 2015 NFL Draft class and has prior mini-camp experience with the Broncos and Colts. With these moves, just the Bengals and Texans currently have two snappers on the roster.

The Packers and Broncos are two teams that have used the past week to evaluate other snapping options by conducting tryouts.

The Packers worked out rookie Antonio Ortiz, who signed with the Bears after rookie mini-camp before being waived, and Mitch Fraboni, who most recently snapped for Pittsburgh in the USFL.

The Broncos have worked out nine snappers in two separate workouts the past few days. The first one featured veterans Kameron Canaday, Joe Fortunato, Ryan Navarro and Matt Overton, while the most recent workout included rookies Tucker Addington, Adam Higuera, Cameron Kaye, Antonio Ortiz and Ross Reiter.

2022 Patrick Mannelly Award Watch List Announced

With college football season starting soon, the Watch List for the Patrick Mannelly Award, given annually to the snapper judged to be the best among all FBS teams, was announced today.

The initial Watch List has 25 snappers, but there are others under strong consideration for the Award. I am honored to be one of the Award’s founders and look forward to this year, which will be the fourth year it is presented. Apologies to South Alabama, who are incorrectly referred to as Southern Alabama in the announcement.

Ten semi-finalists will be announced on November 14, 2022 and those names will be narrowed to three on November 28, 2022. The three finalists will be invited to a live ceremony on December 10, 2022 in Lake Bluff, Illinois where the Award will be presented. The Award benefits Bernie’s Book Bank, a non-profit organization located in Lake Bluff.

Below is the entire Watch List.

More Snappers Let Go as Training Camps Open

With some NFL training camps already underway, two long snappers were waived before camps opened. Antonio Ortiz (Bears) and Ross Reiter (Patriots) were both waived after being signed as undrafted rookie free agents.

With these moves, just three clubs have two snappers in training camp. Those teams are the Panthers, Bengals and Packers.

Snapping Update After Mini-Camps

With NFL teams on break until training camps open in late July, there were a few additional snapping transactions.

The Packers signed a mini-camp tryout rookie snapper, Jack Coco, to the active roster. Coco was used as Georgia Tech’s short snapper during most of his career, but did not snap this past season. He will compete with Steven Wirtel.

With the signing of Coco, five NFL teams have two snappers on the roster. The others are the Panthers, Bears, Bengals and Patriots.

At least one team brought back a rookie mini-camp tryout snapper for mandatory mini-camp, as the Ravens invited snapper Alex Matheson from Cal Lutheran for another look. In addition, the Broncos had rookie snapper Daniel Cantrell from Boise State in for a tryout. Cantrell also was a tryout snapper for the Seahawks and Raiders right after the NFL Draft. Neither snapper was signed to a contract.
