Special Teams University All-American Team

With college football’s regular season winding down, all-Conference and all-American teams are starting to be released.  Very few of these include snappers but, to fill that void, Kyle Stelter of Special Teams University announced his all-American team of long snappers this morning.

Chris Wilkerson of Stephen F. Austin earned First Team honors.  Austin Cutting of Air Force was selected as Second Team, followed by Jacob Bobenmoyer of Northern Colorado as Third Team and Zach Roberts of Georgia Tech was Honorable Mention.

Week Ten In Review

Week Ten is complete and while it was a normal week for snappers, there were some unusual special teams plays.  Five teams (Bills, Cowboys, Raiders, Packers and Dolphins) ran successful punt fakes and there were more missed field goals and extra points.  Remarkably, Cody Parkey of the Bears hit four uprights on two missed field goals and two extra point attempts.

With last week’s firing of Joe Marciano by the Lions, assistant Devin Fitzsimmons will take over the primary special teams coaching duties in Detroit.

In the past week, the Browns worked out snapper Zach Triner, while Christian Kuntz had workouts with both the Buccaneers and Broncos.

Finally, two snappers, Reid Ferguson (Bills) and Beau Brinkley (Titans), recorded solo tackles in punt coverage.

Week Nine in Review

Week Nine was a quiet one on the field, but active off it for snappers.  Two pending unrestricted free agents, Josh Harris (Falcons) and Clark Harris (Bengals), signed new deals to avoid free agency.  The Falcons signed its Harris for three more seasons, while the Bengals kept its Harris for another two.

Special teams coaching changes are rare during the season, but it happened late last night.  The Lions fired veteran Joe Marciano and, at least at this time, there is no replacement announced.

Four snappers recorded tackles in punt coverage this week, with client Patrick Scales (Bears) and Garrison Sanborn (Buccaneers) adding solo tackles, while Thomas Hennessy (Jets) and Mike Windt (Chargers) recorded assists.

Week Eight in Review

Week Eight of the NFL season is now complete and was generally an uneventful one for snappers, with no major issues or injuries.  The Patriots worked out snappers Jon Condo and Christian Kuntz earlier in the week, while the Giants had Taybor Pepper in yesterday.

Three snappers recorded tackles in punt coverage, with Luke Rhodes (Colts) adding a solo tackle and Clark Harris (Bengals) and Garrison Sanborn (Buccaneers) tallying assisted tackles.

Week Seven in Review

Week Seven included a rare but critical snapper penalty for moving the ball before a field goal snap.  LP Ladouceur of the Cowboys was called for a false start penalty as the Cowboys attempted a last-second field goal to tie the game against the Redskins.  The call moved the ball back five yards and the field goal was missed.  Ladoucerur said after the game he had never had that penalty called on him before during his 14 seasons in the NFL.

The NFL Rule Book states that the snap “must be one quick and continuous motion of the hand or hands of the snapper. The ball must leave or be taken from his hands during this motion.” After the game, the NFL tweeted a statement from Al Riveron, the league’s senior vice president of officiating,stating that the call was correct because “[t]he illegal ball movement by the center causes the defense to come across the neutral zone and contact a lineman.”

Yesterday, it was revealed that Redskins special teams coach Ben Kotwica noticed the ball movement by Ladouceur in warm-ups and brought it to the attention of head coach Jay Gruden, who in turn brought it to the attention of game officials.

After a week of no tackles, two snappers,  Charley Hughlett (Browns) and Zach Wood (Saints), tallied tackles in punt coverage.

Week Six in Review

Week Six is complete and saw the return of veteran snapper Matt Overton.  Overton was signed after the Jaguars placed Carson Tinker on injured reserve after a knee injury.  Overton previously replaced Tinker last year when Tinker tore his ACL.  Jon Condo and Zach Triner also worked out for Jacksonville.  Condo did another workout later in the week for the Titans, along with Andrew East and Taybor Pepper.

Things returned to normal in the kicking game this week following 16 missed field goals and six missed extra point in Week Five.  However, it was an unusual week for snapper tackles, as no snapper recorded a tackle in punt coverage.

Week Five in Review

Week Five was a crazy one for kickers, as there were multiple missed field goals and extra points.  Snapping did not appear to be an issue in the misses and even usually reliable kickers had a rough day.

Just one snapper, Taybor Pepper, had a tryout with the Chargers as they searched for a new punter.

Four snappers had tackles in punt coverage with Charley Hughlett of the Browns recording two solo tackles and a forced fumble.  JJ Jansen (Panthers) and Rick Lovato (Eagles) each had a solo tackle and John Denney (Dolphins) added an assisted tackle.

Week Four in Review

Week Four was a notable one as the Thursday night game made Vikings snapper Kevin McDermott a national hero for his incredible toughness.  McDermott lost the tip of his pinky finger when it got caught in a face mask.  McDermott missed two snaps that were handled by reserve tight end David Morgan.  However, McDermott returned after getting stitches and finished the game and should be fine going forward.

The Lions worked out some snappers earlier in the week, bringing in Ryan DiSalvo, Jeff Overbaugh and Taybor Pepper.  The Dolphins waived Lucas Gravelle from its practice squad with John Denney now healthy.

Four snappers had tackles in punt coverage this week, with Zak DeOssie (Giants) adding two solo tackles, while Denney added two assisted tackles.  Luke Rhodes (Colts) had a solo tackle, while Beau Brinkley (Titans) recorded an assisted tackle.

Week Three in Review

Week Three is complete and was a generally uneventful one at the snapping position.  Hunter Bradley of the Packers had some poor short and long snaps, but there were no other significant performance issues or injuries.

Just one team, the Steelers, worked out a snapper, as they had former West Virginia snapper Nick Meadows in to tryout with some punters.

Five different snappers recorded solo tackles in punt coverage this week.  The five were Thomas Hennessy (Jets), Beau Brinkley (Titans), John Denney (Dolphins), LP Ladouceur (Cowboys) and Joe Cardona (Patriots).

2018 Division One Long Snappers

Longsnap.com is proud to release its exclusive compilation of long snappers for each of the Division One FBS college football teams for the 2018 season.

The 2018 list is below and includes uniform number, name, height, weight and class year.  This year’s list should be the most accurate one to date, as it was compiled directly from each team’s official depth charts before the third week of the college season.  Only punt snappers are listed, as some teams use a dedicated punt snapper and kick snapper.
